How can you prepare for a future that is fundamentally uncertain? Scenario planning enables organisations to explore a range of possible futures and consider what they might mean for the choices we make today. But understanding scenarios does not automatically mean that people will act on them. At the 6th International Conference on Anticipation<\/a> in Milan, Reinier Hattink and Femke Pennink gave a presentation on an often-overlooked dimension of futures thinking: the role of emotion and art in scenario planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The role of emotion in futures thinking<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Governments, businesses and civil society organisations use trend analysis and scenarios to make sense of emerging developments and prepare for an uncertain future. By analysing data and exploring possible futures, decision-makers can challenge assumptions, identify new options and develop strategies that do not depend on a single predicted future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, in practice we find that the combination of data and scenarios is not always enough. Ultimately, decisions are made by people. And people do not act on facts and rational considerations alone. Emotions, experiences and identity also shape their decisions. A scenario can be intellectually convinving and still be rejected on an emotional level. This emotional dimension still receives relatively little attention in scenario planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Integrating art into scenario planning can create space for this emotional dimension. Art can help people experience what different choices might mean for other stakeholders, communities and future generations.
