Pension funds

The pension sector often faces transitions such as:

1. Transition of systems: Transitioning from current to new pension system
2. Digital transformation: From uniform pension overview on paper to 24/7-app
3. Sustainability transition: From profit-driven to sustainable pension

Not only do these transitions involve great challenges, they also involve an uncertain future. Dealing with all these changes on the short-term have become a daily task, but since pensions have a long-term time horizon per default, it is inevitable to fix or gaze on the future. Are you agile enough to adapt to other future changes in (geo)politics, economy and the consequences of climatechange? Developing a vision of the future as a control mechanism shall help you make a plan to which your stakeholders have a right. Unfortunately we cannot look ahead into the future, but we can imagine different scenarios of the future and in that way prepare ourselves for what the future might bring.

De Ruijter Strategy has demonstrable experience with long term exploration in the pension fund sector (ABP, PGGM, Aon, Mercurius), both in the board room as in the execution of such strategy and vision projects, and risk assesments, with both smaller and the largest pension funds. We support pension fund boards on their way to a robust vision of the future. We go through a process in which all your stakeholders are involved methodically and according to a plan. We do this to gather input as well as create a support basis for the outcomes of the vision project. During this process the board of the pension fund is in the driver seat, befitting of their role. You continue doing what you are good at and together we ensure that you are and remain ready for the future. The process will provide you with steering mechanisms to ensure you can operate on the long term and offer pension funds that are stable in value.

On the digital learning platform of SPO Pensioenopleiders Paul de Ruijter explains how a scenario-based strategy can help throughout these transitions. Moreover, together with SPO Nyenrode he developed PensioenGPT. Additionally, De Ruijter Strategy supports Nyenrode Executive Education with the educational programmes in the field of pensions. There, we share our methods on how to work with scenarios and come to a shared vision. We also share our insights on current topics such as sustainable, societal, technological and political developments.
